Choosing Driving Lessons

Looking for help finding driving lessons?

Trainee driving instructors.

Everyone has got to start their career somewhere and this includes driving instructors, however some people aren't keen on being taught by a trainee driving instructor and I can sympathise, If I wanted a top quality wall building I wouldn't want the apprentice to build it.

All driving instructors must display their teaching licence clearly in the passenger side front window of their teaching car with the photo of the instructor clearly visible on the inside of the car. Trainee driving instructors display a pink licence with a triangle on it and fully qualified driving instructors display a green licence with an octagon on it (both shown below).

Training to be a driving instructor involves taking 3 exams:-
  • Part 1:- The written exam is similar to the theory test that learner drivers take although a lot more thorough with twice the number of questions.
  • Part 2:- The driving test is twice the length of a learner driving test and covers all possible manoeuvres that could be taught. After this exam potential driving instructors can apply for, and work with a trainee instructor licence.
  • Part 3:- This is the hardest and most underestimated exam of the 3, the potential driving instructor must teach a driving examiner over 2 half hour sessions and pass both sessions. Once this exam has been passed then the potential driving instructor can apply for a fully qualified driving instructors licence (the green badge).

Trainee driving instructors are waiting to pass the final teaching exam to gain the qualification of Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.) and have normally been a practicing driving instructor for less than 6 months. During this 6 month period they will be practicing their teaching ability on members of the public before taking their final exam to see if they are capable of being a fully qualified instructor.
